Dr. Artur Martin Schwarz (1887–1963) of Vienna, Austria is credited with inventing the Schwarz Appliance, also known as the Removable Mandibular Expander, in 1956. The Schwarz Appliance is an orthodontic device that’s used to expand the lower arch and create space for permanent teeth.
Schwarz was a military surgeon in World War I before turning to orthodontics in 1928. The Schwarz Appliance’s expansion screws apply gentle pressure to the dermal bone when activated. The appliance was later used as a basis for the development of the Twin Block Appliance, which is used to treat overbites and promote lower jaw growth.
