The Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) is an essential orthodontic appliance typically utilized during phase I treatment to effectively widen the arch, either prior to or concurrently with fixed orthodontic treatment. Our RPEs are equipped with expansion screws available in sizes of 7 or 11 mm, offering varying activation styles to suit individual patient needs. The typical rate of activation is one (1) per day. Each Rapid Palatal Expander requires four (4) activations per 1mm. It is not uncommon to double up with one turn in the morning and one in the evening. Going too fast may damage the periodontal membrane or roots of the teeth. Going too slow may result in producing more dentoalveolar change and less sutural split than customarily desired.

This appliance should be cleaned every day with toothpaste and a soft toothbrush, morning and night. Encourage the patient to give sufficient time to clean thoroughly around the device, gums, teeth, and bands to maintain proper hygiene and prevent inflammation. Three minutes is recommended.

Tip: If you find an expander is hard to turn, run under warm water to loosen the threads.

Pain from a palate expander will be felt around the jaw and sometimes around the eyes or nose. This pain will usually go away a day or two after the expander is widened.
A palate expander is necessary when a the upper jaw is too narrow to fit the lower jaw, leading to alignment problems and crowding. Your child may need a palatal expander in cases where they have a crossbite, crowding, or impacted teeth.
A palate expander works best when the bones in the jaw have not finished growing, when molars and most adult teeth have grown in, but there are still some adult teeth in the upper jaw that have yet to grow. This period can range between when a child is between five to sixteen years old.
