The Hawley with Shammy Springs appliance is specifically designed to distalize molars, helping to avoid the need for premolar extractions during orthodontic treatment. This appliance is most effective when combined with an anterior bite plate to disarticulate the posterior section, promoting tooth eruption. The standard design uses .0215 x .028 yellow spring wire, extending slightly past the mesial buccal section of the tooth. It can incorporate either an expansion screw or bilateral springs for added flexibility in treatment. Adams clasps are recommended on all available teeth to ensure maximum retention and stability throughout the distalization process.

Treatment & Care

With a pair of bird beak pliers, grab the bottom of the spring right above the helix. Bend the spring back 45 degrees. Patients will need to engage the spring on the mesial of the molar.

Patients should wear 22 hours a day and clean daily with toothpaste to prevent the buildup of plaque and odor. Avoid Efferdent and other effervescent solutions, as it may erode components on the appliance. It is recommended to use products like DentaSoak
or Retainer Splash.
