The Shammy appliance is used to distalize the molars to prevent the need to extract premolars. It is recommended to incorporate an anterior bite plate to disarticulate the posterior section to aid in eruption. Our standard spring is .0215 x .028 yellow spring wire which slightly extends past the mesial buccal section of the tooth. This design can use an expansion screw or bilateral springs and it’s recommended to clasp all available teeth with Adams for maximum retention.

With a pair of bird beak pliers, grab the bottom of the spring right above the helix. Bend the spring back 45 degrees. Patients will need to engage the spring on the mesial of the molar.
Patients should wear 22 hours a day and clean daily with toothpaste to prevent the buildup of plaque and odor. Avoid Efferdent and other effervescent solutions, as it may erode components on the appliance. It is recommended to use products like DentaSoak
or Retainer Splash.
