Hawley Phase 1 Retainer

The Hawley Phase 1 Retainer is designed to maintain maxillary arch stability following expansion and phase I orthodontic treatment. Its primary function is to hold the central and lateral incisors, as well as the first molars, in place as the permanent teeth erupt. Various configurations are available, including a 2-2 bow with or without a loop or a 3-3 bow with spurs on the laterals. Adams clasps provide secure retention while allowing deciduous teeth to exfoliate naturally. To enhance comfort and effectiveness, it is recommended to relieve the lingual acrylic in the premolar area. This retainer ensures long-term retention and stabilization of the dental arch.

Treatment & Care

Patients should wear 22 hours a day and clean daily with toothpaste to prevent the buildup of plaque and odor. Avoid Efferdent and other effervescent solutions, as it may erode components on the appliance. It is recommended to use products like DentaSoak or Retainer Splash.
