The Fan Expander is ideal for patients with cleft palates. Treat this appliance like a fixed expander, but consideration must be given to the activation rate predicated on the hinge location. Patients need to activate 3x per week. Four turns will produce 1mm of expander. Be aware that this appliance will have a significantly greater anterior expansion compared to mid to posterior expansion.
Clean appliance every day with toothpaste and a soft toothbrush, morning and night. Encourage the patient to give sufficient time to clean thoroughly around the appliance, gums, teeth, and bands to maintain proper hygiene and prevent inflammation. We recommend 3 minutes.
Dr. Eleonora Schellino and Prof. Remo Modica designed the fan-type rapid expander in 1996. The fan-type expander is a type of rapid expansion appliance that widens the anterior region of the upper arch, while maintaining expansion at the molar level. It has become a preferred choice for patients needing anterior expansion but already possessing a well-developed posterior arch. It continues to evolve with more precise screws and mechanisms, improving patient comfort and expansion control. Especially helpful to patients with craniofacial or cleft palate diagnosis.
