Fan RPE (Rapid Palatal Expander)

The fan expander (fan RPE) allows for rapid expansion of the palate widening the arch of the anterior section while still maintaining the expansion at the molar level. This appliance self-deactivates when maximum expansion has been achieved preventing over-treatment. The Fan RPE is commonly used for patients with cleft palates and comes in 7 and 11 mm. With each expansion appliance, we provide a custom swivel key that has an integrated activation recording tool directly on the handle.

Treatment & Care

The Fan Expander is ideal for patients with cleft palates. Treat this appliance like a fixed expander, but consideration must be given to the activation rate predicated on the hinge location. Patients need to activate 3x per week. Four turns will produce 1mm of expander. Be aware that this appliance will have a significantly greater anterior expansion compared to mid to posterior expansion.

Clean appliance every day with toothpaste and a soft toothbrush, morning and night. Encourage the patient to give sufficient time to clean thoroughly around the appliance, gums, teeth, and bands to maintain proper hygiene and prevent inflammation. We recommend 3 minutes.
