Fixed Bite Plate

The Fixed Bite Plate is designed to treat deep bites by allowing the eruption of posterior segments. This appliance is cemented into place and can be used alongside fixed brackets, with customizable acrylic colors available. Additionally, the Rick-o-nator can be used to address mandibular and vertical deficiencies. This appliance features a wire bent and welded to bands based on the wax bite, and an anterior ramp that facilitates forward movement of the lower jaw, working in conjunction with brackets to reduce treatment time.

Treatment & Care

This appliance should be cleaned every day with toothpaste and a soft toothbrush, morning and night. Encourage the patient to give sufficient time to clean thoroughly around the appliance, gums, teeth, and bands to maintain proper hygiene and prevent inflammation. 3 minutes is recommended.

Norman Kingsley introduced the bite-jumping appliance in 1879, the first to use a bite plate to “jump the bite”. Kingsley was a prolific writer and sculptor who also founded the New York College of Dentistry. Fixed Bite Plates have been used since the mid-1900s to correct deep bites and guide tooth eruption. The design features acrylic bite blocks that prevent overclosure of the jaws, allowing for the proper eruption of posterior teeth. Over time, this appliance has been adapted for both fixed and removable applications, making it a versatile tool in managing deep bites.
