The Hanks Herbst Appliance provides an exceptional function in class II orthodontic correction. This appliance repositions the mandible forward to move the lower jaw relative to the upper teeth and allow for the adaptation of the muscular, skeletal and dental components.
The Herbst device makes it simple to install the telescopic component on the buccal. Because screws are integrated directly into the telescoping mechanism, there is a reduced chance of small pieces falling into the patient’s mouth. The unique ball and socket design of the appliance provides unrestricted lateral excursion and unparalleled patient comfort. We recommend the Herbst Herbst Appliance to healthcare providers seeking a solution for compliance issues with removable appliances during treatment.

Easy and efficient
The Herbst Appliance treatment will last your patient 6-12 months and is typically best used to move the lower jaw forward before treatment with braces. The timing will vary from case to case and orthodontists should be able to decide when the appliance will be most effective.
Activate the expander of the appliance 1-3x per day if present. Screws are integrated into the Herbst appliance telescopic arms, and you will be provided with an accompanying hex key.
Make sure to dry-fit the Herbst appliance before cementation. You can assemble the Herbst appliance components before insertion to prevent the loss of a screw. If the screws of your appliance are back turning, ODL recommends purchasing CekaBond which can be applied to the threads of the appliance and then assembled.
Muscle Tenderness – When the patient first gets his or her appliance, there may be some overall muscle tenderness and soreness of the teeth for the patient. As the patient’s mouth adapts to the appliance, the teeth soreness should fade.
Tissue Irritation – Because the Herbst appliance is metal, it may cause some slight tissue irritation for the patient, especially on the lower gums. It will take time for the patient’s mouth to adapt to the Herbst appliance. Until it does, encouraging the patient to use dental wax can help to take care of the irritation.
Herbst appliance and diet – Advise the patient to eat softer food as this will help with any muscle soreness, especially after the first week or two after getting the Herbst appliance. After the fixed appliance treatment has been applied to the patient’s teeth, the Herbst appliance requires eliminating sticky foods, like candy and gum, or hard, crunchy food, which can damage the appliance and lengthen treatment time.
Herbst appliances offer orthodontic patients a diverse range of treatment options. Whereas a typical Herbst may contain two “arms” to aid in treatment, our Herbst appliance is unique in that it is a telescoping Herbst appliance.
