The two posterior bite surfaces are connected on the lingual by a stainless steel bar. It can be used for either mandibular repositioning or to treat bruxism. When used to reposition the mandible, deep indexing of the maxillary teeth is left on the occlusal surface of the appliance. This is to hold the mandible in the corrective, protrusive position as indicated by dentist-provided bite registration. When the appliance is used for bruxing or to vertically unload the TMJ, the occlusal surfaces are made smooth with single point contacts for each opposing tooth. Each Gelb splint can be equipped with ball clasps, upon request, for added retention.
Patient wear time should be as-prescribed by doctor and should be cleaned daily with toothpaste to prevent the buildup of plaque and odor. Avoid Efferdent and other effervescent solutions, as it may erode components on the appliance. It is recommended to use products like DentaSoak or Retainer Splash.
